Third Stage of Hairdressing Teacher Training for 6 Partner Centres - APHEDA Training Centre, Phnom Penh and Women’s Development Centre, Kampot Province, Cambodia

1 August to 30 September 2012:

APHEDA ran a 3-day refresher program for 4 ongoing trainers from Mong Russey, Thmar Kul, O’Reang Ov and Kampot.

The refresher training consisted of the demonstration and assessment of previously learned trade skills and teaching methodology.

The continuing teacher trainers from Mong Russey, Thmar Kul, O’Reang
Ov were all deemed highly satisfactory. The new teacher trainees
from Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey and Mong Russey would commence
their training at the introductory level.

From the 6 August to 14 September 2012:

At the Kampot Women’s Development Centre APHEDA ran a 6-week supervised practice teaching program with the 7 trainer/trainees teaching a class of 7 trade trainees, from the Toek Chhou district in Kampot Province.

Teacher trainers/trainees delivered a program in Bridal Up styling, Hair Cutting and Long Hair. This program was particularly successful as there was nil
attrition of trade trainees although they travelled 10km each way by
bicycle to attend.

Thanks must be given to the Women’s Affairs department staff for an excellent trainee selection process, which is critical to successful training outcomes. The trainees will continue their trade training for the next 6 months and then extend for another 3 months to build experience and income generation for their future village cooperatives. Further training identified in the 2011 report resulted in all teacher trainer/trainees participating in a 3 day Nailbar Technique course and a 5 day Bridal and Party makeup technique course. A weekly timetable, lesson
plans, course notes and assessment tool were developed. This can now be
delivered to trade trainees as a component of the Hairdressing and Beauty
Vocational Education and Training Program.

From the 17 September to 28 September, 2012:

APHEDA visited O'Reang Ov, Preah Vihear, Thmar Kul and Mong Russey centres to monitor the teacher trainer/trainees who had started teaching classes in their centres. The aim was to provide feedback on progress and support with facilities. Further discussions were based on an income generation period that would be three-fold in outcomes: gaining industry experience for trainees and generating income to assist trainees to establish co-operatives following their training, and support future trade skill training. The need to provide village based employment opportunities is evident and discussions were conducted around co-operatives.

Village-based Co-operatives:

It was decided that a tools and equipment list be established and the possibility of a generator be available for salon services requiring electricity.
O’Reang Ov Training Centre has huge potential as it has a market shopfront, a training room on 1st floor, and dormitory accommodation for trainees from surrounding villages, and excellent human resources. 6 trainees from the Tuolsophy Village, Tuolsophy Commune and Korng Chey Village, Korng Chey Commune in the O’Reang Ov District are accommodated at the centre, directly resulting in no trade trainee attrition. The program has been running for 1 week only and is progressing well. Currently however, there is a problem with the training room location and limited space.

The centre has requested further training in chemical salon services in 2013.

Preah Vihear Training Centre is a fully functional training facility. APHEDA visited and witnessed the success of the program. 6 trainees from the Chheb Koeut village, Chheb1 commune in the Chhed district are accommodated at the centre, directly resulting in no trade trainee attrition. The program has been running for 2 months and is progressing well. The facilities and management of the Centre are excellent. Further, Preah Vihear has a teacher trainee currently in training at the O’Reang Ov Centre, who will return to the centre when her teacher training course is completed.

The centre has requested further training in chemical salon services in 2013.
Thmar Kul Training Centre is now complete with fresh paint, flooring and all fittings needed to run the Hairdressing and Beauty Program; the bathroom however, is still on the list of things to do. APHEDA visited and witnessed a successful program in place with 1 elementary teacher supervising 1 teacher trainer from Oddar Meanchey, and 6 x trainees from 3 x Chhke Kon Village, Kork Khmom Commune and 3 x Bansaytreng Village, Bansaytreng Commune who are progressing well. The management of the Centre is excellent. Discussions for future needs were based around a shop that faces the market (an extension to the Hairdressing room), as this would provide workplace experience and income generation potential. The management of income generation would need to be discussed further.

Action: Bathroom facilities need to be upgraded and salon shop front needs to be built.

Mong Russey Training Centre is a fully functional training facility. Although quite small in area, the 2 rooms accommodate 1 elementary teacher, 2 teacher trainers from Mong Russey and Kampot, and 6 trainees from 3 x Reamkun Village, Kear Commune and 3 x Ra Village Mong Commune, who were all settling in well to their first week of the program. Again, the management of the Centre is excellent. APHEDA’s visit contributed to improvement around classroom management, and some salon/classroom fixtures were erected.

Discussions for future needs were APHEDA Hairdressing Training 2012
based around a shopfront (4 mtrs x 5mtrs) at the gate on the road, as this would provide workplace experience and income generation. As in Thmar Kul, the management of income generation would need to be discussed further.
In summary, it has been a rewarding Stage 3 of the project with APHEDA. The elementary teachers, teacher trainers and trade trainees are responding well to both the teacher and trade skills training. The 4 out of 6 Training Centres (Kampot, Preah Vihear, Thmar Kul, and Mong Russey) are performing well, as indicated in the report. Plans to develop O’Reang Ov into a more functional facility are in place. Oddar Meanchey is in need of support; and this will be considered priority in my 2013 return visit.

Further plans to include Chemical Services are topics to be set for the training agenda in 2013.

Finally, thanks to Barbara for her vision and consistent support, Kim Song for her undivided commitment to all aspects of the project, Soksan for his guest lectures and comical delivery style and Kha, for his great mechanical mind in fixing everything and always ensuring that we arrived at our destination well fed and safely.
