5 July was International Day of the Cooperative, based on the
theme: “Cooperative enterprises achieve sustainable development for all”.

But what does it mean to be a cooperative? Here are eight principles of a cooperative:

1. Cooperatives are democratic businesses and organisations equally
owned and controlled by a group of people. With one member having
one vote.

2. Cooperatives keep money and jobs in their communities because of
their democratic structure.

3. Coops offer achievable and practical solutions to many economic,
environmental and sustainable problems.

4. Coops are not a charity, they’re an empowering means for self sustenance
and solidarity.

5. Coops strive to make people’s lives, communities and economies fairer,
equitable and democratic.

6. Coops are more resilient in economic downturns and impoverished
communities.

7. Coops are an international movement. There are thousands upon
thousands of coops around the world making a major difference globally
and locally.

8. There’s no right way to manage a coop. They can be flexible to fit
different community and individual needs. There are big coops with
thousands of members and small coops with members in the single
digits.
